Our history
- In 1954, Mac and Dick McDonald made Ray Kroc a franchisee in California.
- In 1961, Ray Kroc bought all rights to the McDonald’s concept from the McDonald brothers for $2.7 million.
- Training has always been at the heart of McDonald’s. Our Hamburger University first opened in the basement of a restaurant in Chicago in 1961. The first graduates got a Bachelor of Hamburgerology degree with a minor in French Fries.
- We opened our first UK restaurant in Woolwich in 1974. This was our 3,000th restaurant world wide.
- We opened our first drive-thru in 1975 in Arizona.
- In 1984, we became the first UK quick service restaurant group to introduce nutritional information for its customers.
Operations and the menu
- We serve around 2 million people every day.
- To grow the potatoes from which we make French Fries and Hash Browns took 4,500 hectares of land in 2005.
- We only use forequarter and flank cuts of beef for our burgers.
- We used over 90 million free range eggs for our Breakfast menu items in 2005, and another 4 million for our sauce and coating ingredients.
- In 2005, we used 6,485 tonnes of shredded and cut Iceberg lettuce.
- We’ve sold over 12 million salads since they were introduced to the menu in 2004.
- With sales of Fruit Bags topping the 10 million mark since 2003, we’re the biggest retailer of pre-prepared fruit.
- We use 45 million cherry tomatoes in our salads every year.
- We were the first quick service restaurant company to introduce litter patrols.
- We’re one of the biggest sponsors of council-provided litter bins.
- Our restaurants have light sensors and computerised energy management systems, which turn the equipment off when it’s not needed.
- Our Operations and Quality manual weighs over 4kg.
In the community
- We’ve created over 10,000 new community football coaches in association with the four football associations, benefiting over 3.6 million children. In all, we’ve invested more than £50 million in football since 1995.
- Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) provides 10 Houses and 26 Family Rooms across the UK for parents who have children in a hospital or hospice.
- In 2005, customers, employees, franchisees and suppliers raised over £3 million for RMHC.
Careers and people
- We employ over 67,000 people. And for 25,000 of them, it’s their first job.
- Nearly 60% of our people are aged between 16 and 21.
- We train more than 17,000 people every year at a cost of £10 million.
- On average, our managers have been with us for over 10 years.
- Over half of our executive team started out in our restaurants.
- 80% of managers started out as Crew members.
- Almost 40% of our managers are women.
- 7% of senior managers and 13.6% of restaurant managers are from ethnic minorities.
- 50% of franchisees were previously Company employees.
- We create more entrepreneurs than any other company in the UK through our franchises.
- 87% of our people feel their experience and training would be useful to other employers.
- We were the first large company to achieve top scores for people management in Investors in People’s new world-class Profile award.
- We distribute 180,000 employee discount cards every year.
- Every year there are more than 1,000 visits to Alton Towers through our discount scheme.
- Through the employee discount scheme, there were more than £27,000-worth of Dell products bought in the first two months of last year.
